Red Devil Basketball Teams to Host Coaches vs. Cancer Game Jan. 19

EUREKA — When Eureka College hosts Greenville in a basketball doubleheader on Saturday, it will be Coaches vs. Cancer day at Reagan Athletic Complex.

The event, which was organized by EC women's basketball assistant coach Tony Griffin, will feature purple T-shirts for sale for $12, and a silent auction of basketballs autographed by some of college hoops' biggest names.

All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

The autographed basketballs feature signatures from Duke coach Mike Kryzewski. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey, Northwestern coach Chris Collins and Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski.

Kryzewski, better known to college hoops fans as Coach K, is the all-time winningest coach in Division I men's basketball. He's also a five-time NCAA national champion, a four-time Olympic gold medalist for USA Basketball and a Naismith Hall of Fame honoree.

Brey is the winningest coach in Notre Dame history. Collins, a former Duke assistant, is in his sixth season guiding Northwestern, and Wojciechowski is in his fifth season with Marquette.

Griffin has been involved with Coaches vs. Cancer for nine years.

"We've all been affected by it," Griffin said. "It's been great. The community has always embraced it and rallied around it. I hope that someday we can eradicate this and don't have to have games like this anymore."

The women's game will begin at 1 p.m., with the men's following at 3 p.m.
