Griffith, Wiegand Named to NABC Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Eureka College senior guard Chet Griffith (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) and junior forward Alex Wiegand (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, according to an announcement from the organization on Tuesday. The announcement marks the sixth consecutive season an EC men's basketball student-athlete has earned the academic honor from the NABC, as well as the second consecutive selection for Griffith.

Griffith brought his four-year collegiate career to a close last February and earned his degree from EC in accounting and business administration in May. He appeared in 19 games for the Red Devils, including his first career start in EC's Feb. 17 victory over Fontbonne late last season.

An accounting major, Wiegand will enter his senior season this November having started 73 of his 76 career appearances 'Neath the Elms. His 428 career rebounds rank 15th on Eureka's modern-era list. He ranked third in the SLIAC with 37 blocked shots last season and ninth in the league with 147 total rebounds.

To be eligible for the NABC Honors Court, student-athletes must be a junior or senior on the varsity roster and own a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year. Additionally, students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution and be a member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

The NABC, located in Kansas City, Mo., was founded in 1927 by Forrest "Phog" Allen, the legendary University of Kansas basketball coach. The largest professional association of basketball coaches, the NABC currently claims a membership of nearly 5,000 men's basketball coaches throughout the ranks of the NCAA, NAIA, junior and community colleges and high school.
