Eureka Baseball Drops Series Finale at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Eureka College baseball team racked up a season-high 11 runs in its series finale at Sewanee. But the Red Devils couldn't stop the Tigers from stringing rallies together.

Sewanee closed the three-game series with a 32-11 victory over EC at Montgomery Field Thursday afternoon. The Tigers won the first two games on Wednesday, 5-4 and 4-1.

EC will wrap up its out-of-state trip at Centre on Friday at 1 p.m. With the loss, the team fell to 2-4. After the three-game sweep, Sewanee moved up to 12-5.

The Red Devils held a 5-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings of play, but the Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the second and broke the game open with an eight-run fourth.

They proceeded to put seven, six and seven runs on the board in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, respectively, before ending it in eight.

By the time it was over, Sewanee had tallied 28 hits off a combination of five EC pitchers.

At the plate, Eureka's Jake Carter (Carlinville, Ill./Carlinville) went 2-for-2 with two RBIS and a walk. Drew Thoele (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) and Jeremy Sinople (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) both had two-hit games as well, and Mike Redmond (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), Thoele, Grant Mullin (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), Hunter Triche (Gray, La./H.K. Bourgeois) and Sinople all recorded doubles.  

Ten Tigers had multiple hit games, five had three hits or more and Joey Calcagno went 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Garrett Liebe homered twice, while Riley Brandvold and Calcagno each knocked one over the fence, too.

Eureka scored its first three runs on two hits and two errors in the first. The visitors loaded the bases and prompted Sewanee to pull starter Jackson Cook after just 2/3 of an inning.

In the second, the team scored a fourth run on a balk and a fifth on a sacrifice fly by Triche to give the Red Devils a five-run advantage.

Carter's RBI single up the middle in the fourth made it 6-4, but that was the last time the Red Devils led. The Tigers' breakout inning came next, leaving EC trailing the rest of the way.

Sewannee's Andrew Naspinski came in midway through the game, gave up two runs on three hits in two innings and notched the win.
