HATTIESBURG, Miss. – William Carey pitchers Devin Smith and Lake Robertson combined to fire a complete-game shutout in game one before the Crusaders exploded for a nine-run fifth inning in the nightcap in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Eureka College baseball team, Wednesday evening at Milton Wheeler Field in Hattiesburg, Miss. William Carey won the opener, 9-0, and also claimed game two, 16-3.
In game one, the Crusaders did most of their damage in the second and fourth innings, scoring three and five runs in each.
The Red Devils were only able to scratch together four hits in the opener.
Senior right-handed pitcher John Kurtz (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) collected his first loss of the season, surrendering three earned runs on four hits over 3.0 innings of play. Kurtz walked two and did not record a strike out.
The Crusaders struck first again in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the home half of the first inning to pick up an early 3-0 lead.
Eureka came back in the top of the second to tie the contest. Sophomore Ray Vogel(Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) walked, stole second and ended up on third base after a throwing error by the Crusaders' catcher. Senior Seth Aydt (Washington, Ill./Washington) drove in Vogel with a single to shallow left. A walk to sophomore Jake Schnulle (Woodstock, Ill./North Woodstock [Cardinal Stitch]) loaded the bases and caused for the Crusaders to dip into their bullpen.
Freshman Max Marcoux (Jennings County, Ind./Jennings County) drilled a single to shallow left bringing home classmate Grant Mullin (Hegewisch, Ill./St. Rita). The Red Devils added one more before the Crusaders were able to get out of the inning with a 3-3 score.
After the offensive outburst Eureka was held in check offensively, mustering up just two hits over the final 15 outs. William Carey scored 13 runs over the fifth and sixth innings of play to put the game out of reach.
Eureka returns to Henry Sand Field this weekend for a three-game series against pre-season St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference favorite Webster. Game one of the series begins Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
