Vogel lifts Red Devils to conference road win over Tigers

MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA – Sophomore Ray Vogel (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) tallied four hits and three runs batted in, lifting the Eureka College baseball team to a 6-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers, Friday afternoon in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Vogel wasted no time putting the Red Devils on the board early, roping a 2-RBI triple to right center to put EC ahead, 2-0. The Tigers countered with three runs in the home half of the first to briefly take a 3-2 edge.

Senior Trevor Froehling (Cissna Park, Ill./Cissna Park [Millikin]) and freshman Michael Manard (Champaign, Champaign Central) led off the second with a pair of singles, later scoring on a wild pitch and RBI-single from freshman Grant Mullin (Hegewisch, Ill./St. Rita). Vogel capped the productive inning with run-scoring single that brought home Mullin.

Eureka added insurance in the sixth, extending their lead to 6-3, on a sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of sophomore Trever Zeibert (Monee, Ill./Peotone).

Freshman Jake Miller (Washington, Ill./Washington) dazzled on the mound, tossing a nine-inning complete game for the first time since John Burns tossed all nine against Benedictine-Springfield on April 15, 2013. The right-hander surrendered three runs on 6 hits.

The Red Devils return to action on Monday with a non-conference contest in Lincoln, Ill. against Lincoln Christian. First pitch of the bout is scheduled for 2 p.m.
