Westminster sweeps Saturday doubleheader from Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. – Sophomore Ray Vogel (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) launched his fifth home run of the season, but the Blue Jays used a pair of home runs to take home a 5-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory, Saturday afternoon at Henry Sand Field. Westminster also took the nightcap, 7-3.

Vogel's two-run shot to left field pushed his hitting streak to seven games, while classmate Trever Zeibert (Monee, Ill./Peotone) extended his hitting streak to ten.

Freshman right-hander Mitch Smith (Morton, Ill./Morton) hurled a complete game, taking a tough loss for EC. Smith surrendered four earned runs while striking out three.

In game two, the Red Devils got on the board first when freshman Josh Mead (Tampico, Ill./Bureau Valley) singled home senior Seth Aydt (Washington, Ill./Washington).

The Red Devils added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings on a pair of groundouts to slice WC's lead to 4-3, but the Blue Jays countered with a three-run seventh frame to put the game out of reach.

Senior Nick Finney (Washington, Ill./Washington [IVCC]) took the bump in game two, tossing 5.0 allowing two earned runs on four hits in the loss. The senior struck out three and issued five free passes.

Eureka and Westminster will conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch here at Henry Sand Field.
