Eureka, Principia spilt conference doubleheader

ELSAH, Ill. – The Eureka College baseball team split a pair of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests against the Principia Panthers, Thursday night in Elsah, Ill. The Red Devils dropped the opener, 9-0, before rebounding to capture the nightcap, 6-2.

After being blanked in the opener, the Red Devils bounced back to tackle the Panthers in the nightcap.

The Red Devils placed four runs across in the fourth, thanks to an RBI-double from sophomore Ray Vogel (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) and bases-clearing double from freshman Jake Miller (Washington, Ill./Washington).

Eureka built a comfortable 6-0 lead before the host pushed two across in the ninth inning.

Senior right-hander John Kurtz (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) went the distance in game two to pick up his first win of the season. Kurtz scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs while striking out five.

Freshman Grant Mullin (Hegewisch, Ill./St. Rita) collected a season-high four hits in the nightcap.

The Red Devils will depart for their final conference doubleheader of the season with a twinbill scheduled at Greenville College on Saturday. First pitch of game one against the Panthers is set for 1 p.m. in Greenville, Ill.
